1888 was a busy year for Holmes and Watson. If Dr. Watson is to be believed, The Sign of Four, A Scandal in Bohemia, and The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor all took place in this year (I would also argue that The Valley of Fear is set in the same year — ed.). As if that weren’t enough, 1888 is remembered (albeit infamously) as the year that Jack the Ripper unleashed an autumn of terror on the citizens of London. While there are no Holmes vs. the Ripper stories in this volume, the authors of the later stories have all alluded to the atmosphere of terror permeating Holmes’s London at that time.

Cain's first mission is supposed to be a piece of cake. Just take out an escaped fugitive in Honduras who's on the run for the rape and murder of a little girl in New York. As Bridge and Nicole investigate, the clues lead them to the government agency they used to work for. The job takes them on several twists and turns, with Bridge and Nicole running into rogue agents, ex-spies, and a trip to Greece, where they will finally learn the truth about what is really going on.

Bridge and Nicole are hired to find five million dollars worth of missing diamonds. Their search for the missing diamonds take them to Los Angeles, Brazil, and finally Puerto Rico, and puts them in direct conflict with a major drug operation, the leader of which is suspected of stealing the jewels. But all is not what it seems, and after coming up empty in their search, Bridge and Nicole have to pivot with their suspects. Maybe the thief has been much closer to them all along.

Jones finally has his number called. Someone from his past is gunning for him. What's really worrisome is that whoever it is, might have skills that even surpass Jones'. After finding out that their secret office isn't as secretive as they thought, the team has to assume that they're being watched, and listened to, at all times.

Thrower is hired by Logan Yarbrough, who is the agent for model Monica St. James. She has been receiving threats, but she’s also scheduled to leave the country to go on some photo shoots across Europe. While Thrower and St. James don’t mix well at first, they soon develop an affection for each other.
