Swimming one mile takes me about an hour, and for a long time, I gaged my experience by how many laps I had swum. Once I got to 36, the mile mark, I would quit swimming. I talked to a lifeguard who is a veteran of the Iraq war and was touched by his humility. He said if I want motivational advice not to talk with him. But he told me his routine involves swimming at whatever pace he feels like for about an hour. I began wondering if I could do that, to swim like I did when I was a child, just for swimming's sake. Just because it feels so wonderful.

Some people write college essays just to turn in the required assignment, but rare students - through their passion - turn into the assignments as works of art. Five of these were actual assignments for classes in autobiography, bloomsbury, religion, peace studies, one was written just for fun during college years, and the final essay was my actual admissions essay.

Counting train cars is akin to counting a herd of slow moving elephants or giraffes, some creature of wildlife in the African safari certainly. But for me, there are other dimensions now that I am working for the people who drive the conductors.

This piece is divided into five sections in assorted genres. The first section is a personal essay on the subject of rituals. It deals with observations on my process of obtaining rituals as part of my life and of what rituals mean to me. The second section is a reflection essay on writing as an integral ritual in my life. The following segment contains poems about tea. Tea drinking is a major contemplative ritual for me. The fourth segment includes journal entries on my routine of walking. Finally, there is a brief afterward wrapping up the piece.

This is a book of poetry and prose that attempts to channel Words Between my eight Year old Self and Me here is the start of it: I was lying here thinking what I'd tell my 8 year old self since reading a book that implied she might still be inside of me. I wanted to ask her what dreams I should still try to achieve. I don’t know why I wasn’t actually surprised when she finally spoke. Why hadn’t I tried to reach out to her sooner? She said having a family of my own was always my dream, babies and children and a man.
