In dit deel van de serie is Agatha Raisin achterdochtig wanneer een knappe en charmante dierenarts, Paul Bladen, dood wordt aangetroffen nadat deze haar kat heeft behandeld. Agatha begint de moord te onderzoeken en ontdekt dat Bladen de reputatie had een rokkenjager te zijn en veel vijanden had gemaakt. Terwijl Agatha dieper in de zaak duikt, ontdekt ze een ingewikkeld web van geheimen, leugens en schandalen in de kleine dorpsgemeenschap.

Wanneer de Engelse Agatha Raisin terugkeert naar haar woonplaats Carsely doet ze een onaangename ontdekking. Er is een nieuwe bewoner in het dorp gekomen, genaamd Mary Fortune; een prachtige blondine met uitzonderlijk organisatie- en tuiniertalent. Met smacht wacht Agatha op een nieuwe moordzaak om James te herinneren aan haar talent voor het oplossen van mysteries. Niet lang daarna worden de tuinen van verschillende dorpsbewoners overhoop gehaald, en dan valt ook het eerste slachtoffer.

De dood van een hufter is deel twee in de detectiveserie geschreven door M.C. Beaton met het karakter van agent Hamish Macbeth in de hoofdrol. Het verhaal speelt zich af in het fictieve Schotse dorp Lochdubh, waar Hamish de moord onderzoekt op kapitein Peter Bartlett, een beruchte rokkenjager. Terwijl Hamish dieper in het onderzoek duikt, ontdekt hij dat bijna elke vrouw in het dorp een motief had om Bartlett te vermoorden.

De Schotse politieagent Hamish MacBeth verlaat voor enkele maanden zijn stad Lochdubh om in te vallen voor een collega in het dorp Cnothan. MacBeth voelt zich helemaal niet thuis in dit grijze en ouderwetse dorp. Maar dat verandert wanneer hij de mooie kunstenares Jenny Lovelace ontmoet. De moord op William Mainwaring zorgt voor veel ophef in het dorp. Mainwaring was een van de meest gehate bewoners.
