Blair Eakins is a 15-year-old Ulster Scot living in Ireland under the crushing weight of famine, poverty, and prejudice against his people. In Berlin findet die Galizierin Mascha Engel endlich eine Heimat und im Romanischen Café und im Künstler-Kabarett Freunde, die nicht an ihrer Herkunft, sondern an ihrer Kunst interessiert sind. Und die lebt sie in ihrer Großstadtlyrik aus. Als sie 1928 den Hebräischlehrer Saul Kaléko heiratet, hat sie sich, blutjung, bereits einen Namen als Lyrikerin gemacht. Ihre Gedichte erscheinen in Zeitungen und mit dem Lyrischen Stenogrammheft erstmals in Buchform. Dann kommt das Jahr 1933 und plötzlich ist Mascha weder Galizierin noch Berlinerin, sondern nur noch Jüdin.

ஒரு தாயின் பந்தமும் பாசமும் எல்லா உறவுகளிலும் உயர்ந்தது என்பதை நான் நன்கு அறிவேன். என்னைப் பெற்றெடுத்த தாயின் பாசம் எனக்குப் பெரியதாகத் தோன்றினாலும், இந்தக் குழந்தைகளின் தாய்க்கு எவ்வளவு பாசமும் பரிவும் இருக்க வேண்டும் என்பதை என்னால் நினைத்துக்கூடப் பார்க்க முடியவில்லை.
