Hyacinthe Chabert, colonel de l'armée impériale de Napoléon Ier, a été déclaré mort lors de la bataille d'Eylau en 1807. Sa veuve Rose Chapotel, ancienne fille de joie, hérite de sa fortune, puis se remarie avec le comte Ferraud, aristocrate émigré qui ambitionne une carrière politique.

Don Juan Belvideore, the young and spoiled son of the wealthy aristocrat Bartolammeo Belvidore, visits his father after being told that his father is on death bed by a maid. During this visit, the father tells his son about an elixir in one of his drawers and wants him to put on this liquid on his body after his death. This liquid shall turn him back to life and make him young again. Don Juan who does not follow his dad’s wish at the time, will wish the same thing from his own son.

The spoiled son of a Spanish nobleman, Don Juan Belvidero cannot wait for the moment to claim the family wealth and title for himself. His father calls to his death-bed to inform him that he is in possession of a magic, death-defying potion. If the son will only rub the liquid on his dead body, the father will come back to life. Don Juan assures his father that he will resurrect him, but will he keep his promise or betray the old man?

Honoré de Balzac uses his classic style of detail to describe a most controversial setting in his novel Le Pere Goriot. The story takes place in Paris just after the fall of Napoleon in 1819. The story focuses on three characters, Rastignac, a student who wants to try and make it big in the capital, Vautrin, an interesting and funny character who is also quite mysterious, and the main character, Goriot, that carries a heavy burden that only a loving parent would endure.
