In this thorough explanation of the human ego, Dr. Hawkins points out that the difficulty with the mind is that it doesn't know the difference between that which is mental from that which "is". He explains that we can transcend the ego and reach the higher states of consciousness not by battling it, spending 30 years in psychotherapy or meditating forever, but by understanding its origin, its nature and its function.
