Erano gli anni in cui la Sicilia era con i Savoia, si succedevano rivolte e rivoluzioni. Per sei giorni Girgenti diventò un regno indipendente con un contadino che si autoproclamò re. Si chiamava Michele Zosimo.

Il commissario Montalbano indaga tra l'immaginaria Vigàta e Tindari, il promontorio a picco sul mare "col piccolo, misterioso teatro greco e la spiaggia a forma di una mano con le dita rosa". Un triplice omicidio è avvenuto - un giovane dongiovanni che viveva al di sopra dei suoi mezzi apparenti, due anziani pensionati seppelliti in casa che improvvisamente decidono una gita a Tindari. Li collega, sembra, solo un condominio.

In una vecchia discarica è stato trovato il cadavere di una ragazza. Parte l'indagine con un Montalbano svogliato, stanco di ammazzatine. Tutto inizia con un cellulare spento. A telefonare è Ester, a non rispondere è Giulio, finito in ospedale a causa di un brutto tamponamento sulla via Aurelia. A riaccendere il telefonino, invece, è Giuditta, la moglie di Giulio, che ovviamente di Ester non sa nulla. Potrebbe essere l'inizio di una commedia rosa, ma il colore di questa storia è decisamente un altro: un testimone, infatti, sostiene che quello di Giulio non sia stato un incidente, ma un tentato omicidio, e la pratica passa dagli uffici dell'assicurazione a quelli del commissariato.

Quasi una vita, momento per momento, quelli più intensi che nel tempo acquistano ancora più vigore e ritornano in tutta la loro vividezza.
