Racconto autobiografico e insieme pamphlet politico, La linea della palma è anche un j'accuse sul mondo a cavallo tra vecchio e nuovo Millennio; una lunga conversazione in cui Camilleri, sollecitato dal giornalista Saverio Lodato, mette a nudo la sua esperienza di scrittore e di uomo di spettacolo, ma anche di uomo impegnato politicamente.

It follows Inspector Montalbano from his very first case in Vigàta, in which he stumbles upon a young girl lurking outside a courthouse with a pistol in her handbag. When she is taken in for questioning and won't utter a single word, Montalbano must find another way to learn who she is trying to kill, and why . . .

In Inspector Montalbano’s coastal town of Vigàta, a surge of migrants have been coming in by boat, and all the town’s hands are on deck to help the arrivals. At the heart of the scene are the police - on the lookout for the people smugglers responsible - and long night shifts are rendering Inspector Montalbano and his officers exhausted. Then one night, while Montalbano is enduring yet another gruelling stint at the port, a separate crime is committed - unexplained, unexpected, and unpleasant. Elena, the dressmaker at the town’s famous tailors, has been found dead....

On what should be a quiet Sunday morning, Inspector Montalbano is called to a murder scene on the Sicilian coast. A man has discovered his father dead in his Vigàtan beach house: his body slumped on the dining room floor, his morning coffee spilt across the table, and a single gunshot wound at the base of his skull.

E così Nonnamà racconta la storia di Gnazio, che tanto tanto tempo fa viveva in quel villaggio e amava la terra e le piante, ma che poi era dovuto partire oltre il mare, ed era stato via così tanto che quando era tornato era forse troppo vecchio per avere una moglie, ma poi ne aveva trovata una, Maruzza.

When Inspector Montalbano receives an early-morning phone call it proves to be the start of a very trying day. For the caller expects Montalbano to arrive imminently at a rendezvous with some friends. But before he can reply, the caller announces himself as someone called Riccardino and hangs up. Later that day, news comes in of a brutal slaying in broad daylight by an unknown assassin who makes his getaway on a motorbike. And when the Inspector learns of the victim’s identity - a man called Riccardino - his troubles are only just beginning.

I moti del 1848 in Sicilia come pretesto per rivalse trasformistiche da parte del notabilato: in questo contesto si svolgono due efferate stragi sulle quali le autorità si affrettarono a stendere un velo di silenzio. La prima strage avvenne a Porto Empedocle, dove il maggiore Sarzana si liberò in un sol colpo di 114 detenuti, soffocandoli e bruciandoli vivi in una cella comune; la seconda ebbe luogo a Pantelleria, dove ad opera di mafiosi e proprietari furono giustiziati 15 contadini in base a pretestuose accuse.

Mauro Assante è, prima di ogni altra cosa, un uomo serio: ha sempre lavorato con scrupolo estremo, guadagnandosi incarichi di crescente responsabilità nell'istituzione in cui presta servizio, l'authority preposta al controllo della trasparenza delle banche italiane. Si è sposato tardi, con la sola donna che sia riuscita ad aprire una breccia nel suo temperamento ombroso, e ha un figlio piccolo, che trascorre i mesi estivi con la madre, in montagna.

Inspector Montalbano is awake at dawn, sitting on his porch, when his attention is caught by a seagull that falls from the sky, performing a strange dance, before lying down to die. Montalbano is perplexed by what he has witnessed and the scene hangs over him like an omen. About to depart for a holiday with his girlfriend Livia, Montalbano makes a quick trip to the police station to tie up loose ends. But when his dear colleague Fazio is discovered missing, Montalbano instead launches a desperate search for his lost friend....

"Sono otto le "mosse" narrative che Camilleri si concede lungo le otto colonne e le otto traverse della sua geometrica scacchiera del racconto: tra i quattro lati del libro, e nell'ordine chiuso di un romanzo-matrioska che dentro di sé inclina, procedendo di racconto in racconto, di tensione in tensione, sull'asse unico dell'attività investigativa del commissariato di Vigàta. Più che racconti lunghi sono romanzi ristretti quelli che qui si spintonano a vicenda e concorrono al disegno unitario: uno compie un giro, l'altro ricomincia.

Kovalyov wakes one morning to discover that his nose has disappeared! It has mysteriously found its way into a loaf of bread on the barber Yokovlevich's breakfast table. The barber tries to get rid of it, but when Kovalyov steps out onto the St Petersburg streets, he finds his nose, now the size of a human, wearing a gold-embroidered uniform and travelling around in a carriage....

Tutto inizia con un cellulare spento. A telefonare è Ester, a non rispondere è Giulio, finito in ospedale a causa di un brutto tamponamento sulla via Aurelia. A riaccendere il telefonino, invece, è Giuditta, la moglie di Giulio, che ovviamente di Ester non sa nulla. Potrebbe essere l'inizio di una commedia rosa, ma il colore di questa storia è decisamente un altro: un testimone, infatti, sostiene che quello di Giulio non sia stato un incidente, ma un tentato omicidio, e la pratica passa dagli uffici dell'assicurazione a quelli del commissariato.

Things are not going well for Inspector Montalbano. His long-distance relationship with Livia is on the rocks, he feels himself getting even older and he's growing tired of the violence in his job. Then the dead body of a young woman is found in an illegal dump, with half her face missing. Her identity at first is unknown; a tattoo of a sphinx moth on her left shoulder links her with three other girls bearing the same mark, all recent Russian immigrants to Italy.

When an elderly man is stabbed to death in an elevator and a crewman on an Italian fishing trawler is machine gunned by a Tunisian patrol boat off Sicily's coast, only Inspector Montalbano suspects a link between the two incidents. His investigation leads to the beautiful Karima, an impoverished housecleaner and sometime prostitute, whose young son steals other school children's midmorning snacks. But Karima disappears, and the young snack thief's life - as well as Montalbano's - is endangered.

Aufruhr in Vigàta: Eine schwedische Produktionsfirma will in dem Küstenstädtchen einen Film mit Sechzigerjahre-Flair drehen. Zur Vorbereitung der Kulisse werden die Bewohner gebeten, alte Fotos und Filme beizusteuern. Auch Commissario Montalbano erreicht eines Tages ein Paket: Der Ingenieur Sabatello hat auf dem Dachboden mehrere Filme seines verstorbenen Vaters gefunden. Sie zeigen jeweils minutenlang dasselbe Detail einer Mauer, und Sabatello kann sich keinen Reim darauf machen.

Dabei benötigt er doch alle Aufmerksamkeit, um die Botschaft einer geheimnisvollen Geige zu ergründen: Denn sie scheint der Schlüssel zur Lösung eines perfiden Falls zu sein.

Vor der Südküste Siziliens wird während einer nächtlichen Ausfahrt ein Fischer auf seinem Boot erschossen. Kurz darauf findet man den Geschäftsmann Lapecora erstochen im Aufzug seines Wohnhauses im Küstenstädtchen Vigàta auf. Zwei Morde ohne jeden Zusammenhang, so scheint es. Bis Commissario Montalbano einen jugendlichen Dieb auf frischer Tat ertappt, der ihn auf die Spur der geheimnisvollen Schönheit Karima bringt.
