Cut off by her own relations, pretty, dainty widow Eliza Budley must visit some other family manor to purloin expensive baubles. Certo Gary non è amato, ma dal risentimento ad arrivare a ucciderlo, decapitarlo e cuocerlo allo spiedo durante un sagra ce ne passa.

Quelque chose ne tourne pas rond dans le village écossais de Stoyre. Najbardziej znienawidzony mieszkaniec najbardziej ponurego miasta Szkocji pływa brzuchem do góry w zbiorniku pełnym skorupiaków. Gdy wszyscy martwią się, żeby na stoły najznakomitszych brytyjskich restauracji trafiły wyłącznie towarzyszące mu homary, na talerzu Hamisha Macbetha ląduje szyta grubymi nićmi afera. Tym razem będzie musiał uporać się z naczelnym inspektorem, który chce zatuszować sprawę morderstwa, z piękną dziewczyną, która usiłuje go uwieść, oraz z mordercą, który już szykuje kolejną ucztę.

Maggie Baird nie jest ani miła, ani uprzejma, ale za to jest bardzo bogata. Kiedy ginie w pożarze samochodu, Hamish ma aż pięciu kandydatów do roli mordercy – nieśmiałą krewną i czterech byłych kochanków Maggie, spośród których usiłowała wybrać sobie męża. Rzecz jasna, wszyscy mieli okazję, by majstrować przy aucie denatki. Odkrycie sprawcy będzie wymagało od Hamisha nadzwyczajnego sprytu.

Cztery pary, dokładnie wybrane przez profesjonalną swatkę Marię Worth, gromadzą się w hotelu na zamku Tommel. Jednak zamiast miłosnej aury zamczysko wypełnia atmosfera aż gęsta od nienawiści. Czarę goryczy przelewa przyjazd ordynarnej i chciwej Pety. A kiedy miłość wychodzi oknem, morderca wchodzi drzwiami. Peta zostawia Hamishowi kłopotliwą zagadkę do rozwiązania: kto towarzyszył Pecie podczas jej ostatniego posiłku, który kobieta zakończyła martwa, z dużym czerwonym jabłkiem wetkniętym w usta.

W szkockich górach jest środek lata, ale nad głową Hamisha Macbetha zbierają się chmury. Co prawda dostaje awans, ale jego nowy szef to matoł. Na dodatek pewien złowieszczy cygan i jego dziewczyna zaparkowali swój rdzewiejący wóz na środku wioski. Kłopoty zaczynają się, gdy znikają lekarstwa doktora, a wraz z nimi pieniądze. Sądziedzi nagle przestają służyć sąsiedzką pomocą – nikt nie chce pisnąć ani słówka. Sprytny Hamish musi delikatnie wyciągać z mieszkańców wsi całą prawdę.
