"Das Schloß" ist der letzte große unvollendete Roman Franz Kafkas. 1926 postum von Max Brod veröffentlicht, erzählt er von K., der vom Grafen eines ländlich gelegenen Schlosses als Landvermesser beauftragt wird. Doch K.s Versuche, ins Schloß zu gelangen, scheitern ebenso wie sein Bemühen, im Dorf seinen Platz zu finden.

L'ultimo romanzo, incompiuto, di Kafka, la cui stesura ebbe inizio nel gennaio 1922 (l'autore non ha ancora quarant'anni e ne mancano due alla morte per tubercolosi faringea) e proseguì fino al settembre dello stesso anno. Non esiste una versione definitiva dell'autore che anzi dispose che il manoscritto fosse distrutto. Più che un romanzo "Il castello" si può definire un insieme di frammenti in cui il personaggio K., arrivato a un non-luogo, un misero villaggio immerso nel freddo, tenta di avvicinarsi alla meta, il Castello appunto.

Vom Schloßberg war nichts zu sehn, Nebel und Finsternis umgaben ihn, auch nicht der schwächste Lichtschein deutete das große Schloß an." - Je dringlicher der Landvermesser K. nach seiner Ankunft versucht, dort hinein zu gelangen, desto weiter entfernt er sich von seinem Ziel, bis er es schließlich ganz aus seinem Blick verliert. Was bleibt, sind die unnahbaren Beamten und ihre bedrohliche Bürokratie - und ein Roman, der bis heute nichts von seiner großartigen Rätselhaftigkeit eingebüßt hat.

The Metamorphosis (German: Die Verwandlung) is a novella written by Franz Kafka which was first published in 1915. One of Kafka's best-known works, The Metamorphosis tells the story of salesman Gregor Samsa who wakes one morning to find himself inexplicably transformed into a huge insect (German ungeheures Ungeziefer, literally "monstrous vermin"), subsequently struggling to adjust to this new condition. "The Great Wall of China" is a short story by Franz Kafka. While written in 1917, it was not published until 1930, seven years after his death. Its first publication occurred in Der Morgen, a German literary magazine. A year later, Max Brod included it in Beim Bau der Chinesischen Mauer, the first posthumous collection of short stories by Franz Kafka. Contained within the story is a parable that was separately published as "A Message from the Emperor" ("Eine kaiserliche Botschaft") in 1919 in the collection Ein Landarzt (A Country Doctor).

"Jackals and Arabs" is a short story by Franz Kafka, written and published in 1917. The story was first published by Martin Buber in the German monthly Der Jude. A European traveler from the North, accompanied by Arab guides, is camped in the desert. When night falls, and the Arabs are at a distance, the traveler is accosted by talking jackals. The jackals speak of an age-old hatred for Arabs, whom they associate with uncleanliness. They relate a belief passed down from their ancestors, that a man such as the protagonist would be the one to "end the quarrel which divides the world in two".

"In the Penal Colony" is a short story by Franz Kafka written in German in October 1914, revised in November 1918, and first published in October 1919. As in some of Kafka's other writings, the narrator in this story seems detached from, or perhaps numbed by, events that one would normally expect to be registered with horror. Internal clues and the setting on an island suggest Octave Mirbeau's The Torture Garden as an influence.

The story is set in an unnamed penal colony. In the Penal Colony describes the last use of an elaborate torture and execution device that carves the sentence of the condemned prisoner on his skin in a script before letting him die, all in the course of 12 hours. As the plot unfolds, the listener learns more and more about the machine, including its origin, and original justification.
