Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (9 January 1860 - 15 July 1904) was a Russian playwright and short story writer best known for his infamous four plays The Seagull, The Cherry Orchard, The Three Sisters and Uncle Vanya which shaped modern theatre as we know it today. Despite of the fact that he is best known for his work as a playwright, Chekhov is considered to be one of the greatest writers of the short story form among critics. He completed more than 200 works throughout his lifetime. Chekhov wrote The Party in 1888.

Yegor the huntsman, walking down a country road, accidentally meets his estranged wife, Pelageya, whom he's been married to for 12 years but visited just several times, and even then, drunk and violent. She weeps and, fawning before him, implores him to visit her more often. He tries to explain why he, the best sportsman around, 'a pampered man', enjoying good tea and 'refined conversation', could not bear to live in a village.

Yakov Ivanov is an elderly coffin-maker in a small village with a population that doesn’t generate enough deaths for him to make any real money. He is also a fiddler who sometimes sits in with a Jewish klezmer orchestra in spite of his dislike of Jews and of the flutist, Rothchild, in particular. Marfa, his long-suffering and unloved wife, becomes mortally ill with a contagious illness. He struggles to recall their shared past as he builds her coffin and soon he, too, succumbs to mortal illness, provoking a self-searching meditation and a change of heart.

The Duel is a novella by Anton Chekhov and was published in 1891. It tells the story of the debates between a scientist, a government worker, his mistress, a deacon, and a physician about wits and ethics. This verbal battle leads to a violent contest: the duel. The story begins with Ivan Andreitch Laevsky - a government worker - who has run off with a married woman, Nadyezyhda Fyodorovna to a small town in the Caucasus. While there, he forms several acquaintanceships with a colorful array of characters.
