O. Henry was the greatest short-story writer of his day. His characters may be from America at the turn of the century, but their foibles and eccentricities are known to us all, irrespective of culture or time. "Rieducazione con scasso" è un racconto breve pubblicato per la prima volta sul giornale Cosmopolitan nel 1903. Descrive il rientro in società del giovani rapinatore Jimmy Valentine. Nel 1910 il drammaturgo Paul Armstrong riadattò la storia in uno spettacolo teatrale di grande successo a Broadway, intitolato "Aliam Jimmy Valentine", successivamente trasformato in 3 diversi film nel 1915, 1920 e 1928. Il protagonista è ispirato all'incidente descritto ne "I Miserabili di Hugo". La storia fu inoltre adattata in una radio serie nel 1938.

In "Memorie di un cane giallo", un cane di nome Lovely si sente male per il marito della sua padrone, perchè va a lavorare tutto il giorno mentre sua moglie sta a casa a fare nulla. Un giorno parla con un altro cane che gli dice che il suo padrone esce spesso per divertirsi. Anche Lovely vorrebbe che il suo padrone stia bene perciò lo conduce verso un bar. Dopo il bar, il padrone libera Lovely, ma lui rimane e fa capire al suo padrone che dovrebbe piuttosto liberare se stesso.
