Maddrax und die Barbarin Aruula sind in der Nähe von Zürich auf den schlafenden König gestoßen. Einen exzentrischen Millionär, den sie aus seinem 500 Jahre langen Schlaf in einer Kältekammer erweckt haben. Doch schon bald werden sie von ihm gezwungen, die Nüsslis, Nachfahren Züricher Bänker, denen er viel Geld schuldet, unschädlich zu machen. Ein Krieg bricht aus. Mit einem Trick und der Hilfe des Spions Sepp Nüssli spielen Matt und Aruula die beiden Parteien gegeneinander aus.

Matt hört von einem Feuervogel, der angeblich abgestürzt ist. Schnell wird ihm klar, dass es sich dabei um einen Jet wie seinen handeln muss. Er hofft, dass seine Kameraden ganz in der Nähe sind. Währenddessen hetzt Baloor, der Schamane, seiner ehemaligen Sippe mutierte Riesenwürmer auf den Hals, gegen die die Barbaren keine Chance haben.

Matt und die schöne Aruula haben sich von Sorbans Barbarenstamm getrennt und sind auf dem Weg nach Rom. Allmählich begreift Maddrax, dass der Komet "Christopher Floyd" seine alte Welt völlig zerstört hat und dass er, so unwahrscheinlich das auch klingt, in der Zukunft gelandet ist. Doch als sie die Ewige Stadt erreichen, muss Matt erkennen, das alles noch viel schlimmer ist.

Im Jahr 2012 trifft ein Komet die Erde und stürzt sie ins Chaos. Die Druckwelle wirft drei Stratosphärenjets unter dem Kommando von Matthew Drax durch einen Riss im Raum/Zeit-Kontinuum weit in die Zukunft. Während sich sein Kopilot Professor Dr. Jacob Smythe mit dem Schleudersitz rettet, stürzt Matt über den Alpen ab.

Mitten in den Alpen sind Matt und Aruula zwischen die Fronten zweier verfeindeter Stämme geraten. Beide Seiten versuchen, die beiden für ihre Zwecke einzuspannen. Schließlich kommt es zu dem alles entscheidenden Kampf, bei dem Aruula lebensgefährlich verletzt wird.

Professor Dr. Jacob Smythe, Matts ehemaliger Kopilot, haust mit seiner Vampirarmee in der Festung des Blutes in Mailand und verbreitet dort Angst und Schrecken. Außerdem versorgt er seine Untertanen regelmäßig mit technischen Raffinessen, wie z.B. mit selbstgebauten Motorrädern. Und er hat nicht vor, sich dabei von Maddrax stören zu lassen.

Matt ist von dem paradiesischen Leben in München völlig verzaubert. Doch Aruula kommt schnell dahinter, dass die heile Welt des sagenumwobenen Ethera, nur ein Trugbild ist. Erzeugt von einer schlangenähnlichen Kreatur, die unter der Stadt haust, und sich von Menschen ernährt. Als auch Aruula in die Fänge der Bestie gerät, muss Matt alles auf eine Karte setzen und versuchen, dem Spuk ein Ende zu machen.
