This short story is included in Tales of the Jazz Age, a collection written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald says, "I suppose that of all the stories I have ever written this one cost me the least travail and perhaps gave me the most amusement...it was written during one day in the city of New Orleans.... My amusement was derived from the fact that the camel part of the story is literally true; in fact, I have a standing engagement with the gentleman involved to attend the next fancy-dress party to which we are mutually invited, attired as the latter part of the camel"....

First published in 1922 as part of Fitzgerald's Tales of the Jazz Age, this short story calls upon the author's innate sense to focus on the sense of disaster and is often regarded as one of his best short story works.

This has the distinction of being the only magazine piece ever written in the original Knickerbocker, a New York hotel. The business was done in a bedroom there, and shortly afterward that memorable hostelry closed its doors. When a fitting period of mourning had elapsed it was published in the Smart Set. Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald was born on 24th September 1896 in Saint Paul, Minnesota into an upper-middle class family. Whilst his mother was pregnant with him, his two young sisters tragically died. Fitzgerald once said this was when his destiny as a writer was ordained. His intelligence and talent was recognised from an early age, with his first story, about a detective being published in the school magazine when he was just 13. He continued to write with great mastery and the titles of his novels and many of his 164 short stories are household names.

Porcelain and Pink - one of the stories, which entered in a collection of eleven short stories by F. Scott Fitzgerald Tales of the Jazz Age (1922). Originally appearing in the January 1920 issue of The Smart Set, Porcelain and Pink was the earliest of the stories Fitzgerald would later reprint in a book-length collection. Porcelain and Pink is a comic one-act play. The plot involves a young woman in a bathtub and a case of mistaken identity. The story is a bit of a lark, a one-act burlesque that opens with a splendidly droll parody of stage directions, featuring a blue porcelain bathtub.

A newlywed young woman named Roxanne and her short story-writing husband Jeffery begin married life in a home of their own, looking forward to many years of happiness and success. However, sudden tragedy strikes when Jeffery becomes blind and paralyzed due to a blood clot in his brain.

As the story opens the invisible narrator and reader are in the home of Wessel Caster. Wessel is reading The Faerie Queen when he is suddenly disturbed by frantic pounding at his front door. When Wessel opens the door he finds a man exhausted and frightened.

This story was written just after the author completed the first draft of his second novel. However it may seem, the story was supposed to be in the present time/tense. It was published in the Metropolitan. At the end of the story, Merlin deeply regrets not following his dreams. Caroline represents the life that Merlin always wanted, but he chooses to ignore these dreams.
