The collection of the great Russian writer Anton Chekhov (1860-1904) includes his stories.

From the sublime to the ridiculous, Anton Chekhov saw it all. And he wrote about it as only a master storyteller can, capturing not only the nuances of human behavior, but also the motivations behind the behavior. Often, too, he found universal truths along the way. These stories cover a variety of themes, both comic and tragic, as his characters encounter religion, government bureaucracy, and each other. And although they were written long ago, they are still surprisingly fresh.

Cada año por Navidad, desde hace trece años, el consejero de Estado Navaguin encuentra entre las firmas del libro de visitas la de un tal Fedinkof. El Sr. Navaguin no sale de su asombro pues no sabe quién puede ser, ni cómo ni cuándo entra en su casa para firmar. On an early October morning, Psyekoff, the right hand-man to Lieutenant Marcus Ivanovitch Klausoff, informs the inspector of police that he suspects Klausoff has been murdered. Immediately, the inspector and his team head to Klausoff’s home to investigate the matter. After examining the outside of the house, the inspector sends word to the magistrate, asking him to come investigate the case. When the magistrate and his assistant arrive, they check Klausoff’s room, only to find that he is not in there.

Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (9 January 1860 - 15 July 1904) was a Russian playwright and short story writer best known for his infamous four plays The Seagull, The Cherry Orchard, The Three Sisters and Uncle Vanya which shaped modern theatre as we know it today. Despite of the fact that he is best known for his work as a playwright, Chekhov is considered to be one of the greatest writers of the short story form among critics. He completed more than 200 works throughout his lifetime. Chekhov wrote The Party in 1888.

Anton Tsjechov of Tsjechov was een Russische schrijver. Anton Chekhov is now justly celebrated as one of Russia’s greatest writers, but this reputation was hard won in his time. His work consistently challenged expectations, and his insights were not always easy to see. The continued relevance of his stories, however, has shown that Chekhov was ahead of his time, and the nine short stories collected here showcase his very best writing.

A local investigating magistrate unsuccessfully tries to explain that it is wrong to take nuts off the railroad track to a peasant, Grigoryev, who simply cannot see why he's to be deprived of his right to use an iron nut as a weight for his fishing line.

Yakov Ivanov is an elderly coffin-maker in a small village with a population that doesn’t generate enough deaths for him to make any real money. He is also a fiddler who sometimes sits in with a Jewish klezmer orchestra in spite of his dislike of Jews and of the flutist, Rothchild, in particular. Marfa, his long-suffering and unloved wife, becomes mortally ill with a contagious illness. He struggles to recall their shared past as he builds her coffin and soon he, too, succumbs to mortal illness, provoking a self-searching meditation and a change of heart.

The Duel is a novella by Anton Chekhov and was published in 1891. It tells the story of the debates between a scientist, a government worker, his mistress, a deacon, and a physician about wits and ethics. This verbal battle leads to a violent contest: the duel. The story begins with Ivan Andreitch Laevsky - a government worker - who has run off with a married woman, Nadyezyhda Fyodorovna to a small town in the Caucasus. While there, he forms several acquaintanceships with a colorful array of characters.

In this series we listen to short stories that are NOT by perhaps the most well-known author of this type. But the many other rich talents in the volume may have treated the subject matter a little differently, or were perhaps just overlooked in the stampede to applaud the winner, but these authors are of equal merit.
