On an early October morning, Psyekoff, the right hand-man to Lieutenant Marcus Ivanovitch Klausoff, informs the inspector of police that he suspects Klausoff has been murdered. Immediately, the inspector and his team head to Klausoff’s home to investigate the matter. After examining the outside of the house, the inspector sends word to the magistrate, asking him to come investigate the case. When the magistrate and his assistant arrive, they check Klausoff’s room, only to find that he is not in there.

Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (9 January 1860 - 15 July 1904) was a Russian playwright and short story writer best known for his infamous four plays The Seagull, The Cherry Orchard, The Three Sisters and Uncle Vanya which shaped modern theatre as we know it today. Despite of the fact that he is best known for his work as a playwright, Chekhov is considered to be one of the greatest writers of the short story form among critics. He completed more than 200 works throughout his lifetime. Chekhov wrote The Party in 1888.

A local investigating magistrate unsuccessfully tries to explain that it is wrong to take nuts off the railroad track to a peasant, Grigoryev, who simply cannot see why he's to be deprived of his right to use an iron nut as a weight for his fishing line.

Yakov Ivanov is an elderly coffin-maker in a small village with a population that doesn’t generate enough deaths for him to make any real money. Marfa, his long-suffering and unloved wife, becomes mortally ill with a contagious illness. He struggles to recall their shared past as he builds her coffin and soon he, too, succumbs to mortal illness, provoking a self-searching meditation and a change of heart.

The Duel is a novella by Anton Chekhov and was published in 1891. It tells the story of the debates between a scientist, a government worker, his mistress, a deacon, and a physician about wits and ethics. This verbal battle leads to a violent contest: the duel. The story begins with Ivan Andreitch Laevsky - a government worker - who has run off with a married woman, Nadyezyhda Fyodorovna to a small town in the Caucasus. While there, he forms several acquaintanceships with a colorful array of characters.
