Og lige straks møder han et stort ét på en mennesketom vej i Arizona. En jeep er kørt direkte ind i det eneste træ i miles omkreds, og under den nådesløse ørkensol er intet, hvad det ser ud til at være. Få minutter efter er Reacher på vej ind i den nærliggende flække af en grænseby, som har kendt bedre dage. Ved siden af sig har han den tidligere soldat og nuværende FBI-agent Michaela Fenton, der forsøger at finde sin tvillingebror. Han er muligvis kommet i selskab med nogle farlige personer.
