In the early hours of 7th August 1985, five members of the Bamber family were shot dead with a .22-calibre Anschutz rifle. Sheila Caffell, who was known to have struggled with mental illness, was at first thought to have murdered her twin sons and adoptive parents and then to have turned the gun on herself. Forensic evidence, however, told a different story and raised such questions as how Sheila could have received two shots in an act of suicide. A year later it was Jeremy Bamber, the only survivor, who was convicted of the callous murders of his entire family.

On this final day of his life, Nils takes the boat out for the last time. In fact, he seems to be somewhere in between life and death already as he is reunited with his old dog, Luna. The passengers that come on and get off are all dead, too. They are people he has transported through a long life as a ferryman, and they board the ferry just as they were when he knew them. Gradually we also get Nils' own story, and above all the story of his marriage to a woman he loved very much.

During the 1990s, the UK police preferred to be accused of racism rather than corruption. Stop and searches for no reason other than the colour of someone's skin had managed to turn many law-abiding citizens into cop haters. But all I ever wanted was to be a good police officer. I thought I could be the smartest, the toughest, the bravest - but also, the fairest - cop in the neighbourhood. I ended up in an elite, compact, anti-narcotics unit given unrestricted authority to wage war on the area's drugs underworld, focusing on criminals in and around a vast housing estate.
