Alice au pays des merveilles est un roman de Lewis Carroll. Il raconte l'histoire d'une fille nommée Alice qui tombe dans un terrier de lapin dans un monde fantastique peuplé d'étranges créatures. Le conte joue avec la logique, ce qui lui confère une popularité durable auprès des adultes et des enfants. Il est considéré comme l'un des meilleurs exemples du genre littéraire du non-sens. Son déroulement narratif, sa structure, ses personnages et son imagerie ont eu une influence considérable sur la culture populaire et la littérature.

Die fiktive Welt, in der Alice im Wunderland angesiedelt ist, spielt in solch einer Weise mit Logik, dass sich die Erzählung unter Mathematikern und Kindern gleichermaßen großer Beliebtheit erfreut. Sie enthält zahlreiche satirische Anspielungen - nicht nur auf persönliche Freunde Carrolls, sondern auch auf die Schullektionen, die Kinder im England jener Zeit auswendig lernen mussten. Während ihre Schwester ihr aus einem Buch vorliest, sieht die Titelheldin Alice ein sprechendes, weißes Kaninchen, das auf eine Uhr starrt und meint, es komme zu spät.

Im Gegensatz zum ersten Band, bei dem Spielkarten als durchgehendes Thema dienen, baut Carroll hier die Handlung des Buches rund um eine Schachpartie auf. Die Züge dieser Schachpartie werden zu Beginn des Buches präsentiert, die - mit einigen Ausnahmen - eine reguläre Partie darstellen. Ausnahmen sind: Weiß bewegt den König nicht aus einer Schachkonstellation; anstelle der Regel, dass Weiß und Schwarz abwechselnd ziehen, tritt die, dass Alice, die in der Partie die Rolle des weißen Damenbauers eingenommen hat, abwechselnd mit einer der beiden Farben am Zuge ist.

Eigentlich wollen Alice und ihre kleine Schwester Edith nur ihr Osternest im Garten suchen, als sie - tief in ihr Spiel versunken - alles um sich herum vergessen und irgendwann lachend im Gras liegen. Aufeinmal kommt ein Wind auf und der Kirschbaum über ihnen scheint sich zu drehen, wie ein großes Windrad, immer schneller und schneller, und bringt die beiden Mädchen schließlich ins Wunderland zurück. Hier begegnet Alice nach langer Zeit dem Hutmacher wieder, der ihr dabei hilft, ihren verwundeten Löwen zu heilen. Für Edith hat er einen ganz besonderen Luftballon aus Glitzer.
