Lo spunto narrativo parte dal saggio di E. A. Poe "Il giocatore di scacchi di Maelzel" in cui lo scrittore smaschera un falso automa scacchista detto Il Turco che era diventato famoso in Europa e negli Stati Uniti. Ma "Bitter Bierce" manipola la materia a suo modo.

"La strada al chiaro di luna" è un racconto gotico dell'orrore apparso per la prima volta sul cosmopolitan nel 1907. La storia presenta la storia dell'omicidio di una donna dalla prospettiva del figlio, del marito e di se stessa, tramite un medium. Ambrose Bierce con "La strada al chiaro di luna", una storia in bilico tra mistery e ghost story, si rivela tale ancora una volta. Una donna viene uccisa nella notte, come e perché lo si scoprirà grazie a tre diverse testimonianze, una delle quali - la più struggente e toccante - fornita proprio dalla vittima tramite un medium.

"Accadde al ponte di Owl Creek" è un racconto breve ambientato durante la guerra Civile americana. Un fatto di cronaca, al ponte sull'Owl Creek è del 1891, e ci cala direttamente nel cuore del trauma originario. Ne è protagonista Peyton Fahrquhar, un piantatore ardente sudista e secessionista, proprietario di molti schiavi, che allo scoppio della guerra non aveva potuto arruolarsi nell’esercito confederato. Significativo che l'autore si rifiuti di dirci il perché, dichiarando semplicemente che non è necessario riferire le cause impedienti.
