The Shadow Line tells the story of a young man whose dream to be a captain of his ship comes true accidentally. He should command a boat from Bangkok to Singapore filled with sick passengers. His crew gets infected by malaria, and he finds out the medicine necessary to save them is missing deliberately after a couple of days wandering in the sea with no wind in sight. His mate convinces him that the ghost of the previous captain, who before his death turned insane and wanted to take the ship down along himself and the crew, has cursed them.

Heart of Darkness centers around Marlow, an introspective sailor, and his journey up the Congo River to meet Kurtz, reputed to be an idealistic man of great abilities. Marlow takes a job as a riverboat captain with the Company, a Belgian concern organized to trade in the Congo. As he travels to Africa and then up the Congo, Marlow encounters widespread inefficiency and brutality in the Company’s stations. The natives of the region have been forced into the Company’s service, and they suffer terribly from overwork and ill treatment at the hands of the Company’s agents.

Hounded by an act of cowardice that follows him constantly, Jim wanders the world and eventually settles in the Far East. Here, slowly but surely, he comes to terms with his inner turmoil through acts of courage and leadership. But have the psychological demons that haunt him finally been exorcised? Listeners should be aware that the text contains racial epithets of the period that may be offensive to some of today's listeners.

The story of the enigmatic Kurtz and his outpost in deepest Congo as told by Marlow is an adventure story that examines the intent and effects of colonization. It remains one of the most controversial and profound writings of world literature.

Jim, a young British seaman, becomes first mate on the Patna, a ship full of pilgrims travelling to Mecca for the hajj. When the ship starts rapidly taking on water and disaster seems imminent, Jim joins his captain and other crew members in abandoning the ship and its passengers. A few days later, they are picked up by a British ship. However, the Patna and its passengers are later also saved, and the reprehensible actions of the crew are exposed. The other participants evade the judicial court of inquiry, leaving Jim to the court alone.

Although Heart of Darkness was one of the first literary texts to provide a critical view of European imperial activities, it was initially read by critics as anything but controversial. While the book was generally admired, it was typically read either as a condemnation of a certain type of adventurer who could easily take advantage of imperialism’s opportunities, or else as a sentimental novel reinforcing domestic values.
