In der Wiener Polizeidirektion werden Holmes und Watson von Zentralinspektor Rudolf von Götz empfangen. Als erstes nehmen sie den Tatort, die kaiserliche Schatzkammer, in Augenschein. Holmes entwickelt eine erste Theorie zu dem Diebstahl.

Holmes und Watson müssen eine Nacht in Feldkirch verbringen, ehe sie weiter nach Osten reisen können. Mit der kaiserlich-königlichen Reichsbahn geht es über Innsbruck, Salzburg und Linz nach Wien, wo sie am Kaiserin-Elisabeth-Bahnhof ankommen.

Unter Anleitung ihres Führers verbessern Holmes und Watson zwangsläufig ihre Fähigkeiten im Skifahren und überwinden drei Berge. Nach einer unangenehmen Begegnung animalischer Art erreichen sie schließlich die österreichische Grenze.

Über Bern fahren Holmes und Watson nach Zürich. Während Watson daran gelegen wäre, die emotionalen Ereignisse der bisherigen Reise gemeinsam aufzuarbeiten, gibt sich Holmes diesbezüglich reserviert. Aus der Zeitung informieren sie sich über die angebliche Epidemie in Wien.

Holmes und Watson erreichen Genf, wo sie im luxuriösen Hotel Beau-Rivage übernachten. Als sie am nächsten Morgen einen Spaziergang auf der Promenade am Seeufer unternehmen, kommt es zu einem überaus gefährlichen Zwischenfall.

Der Zug kann aufgrund der Schneemassen nicht mehr weiterfahren, sondern muss nach Sankt Gallen zurückkehren. Holmes hat jedoch eine Alternative parat: Gemeinsam mit einem einheimischen Führer will er sich auf Ski nach Österreich durchschlagen.

Die Zugfahrt von Zürich in Richtung Österreich wird von einem heftigen Schneesturm begleitet. Als ein Lawinenabgang die Schienen blockiert, kommt es zur Notbremsung. Watson kümmert sich um verletzte Passagiere, während Holmes die Lage sondiert.
