Ein Ausländer, ein gewisser Rudolph Unterweger, wird erstochen in seiner Wohnung aufgefunden. Doch damit nicht genug - die Leiche ist verstümmelt, im Mund des Toten findet sich ein seltsames Metallobjekt: Es zeigt einen doppelköpfigen Adler, nebst eingeritzter römischer "II". Ein Freimaurersymbol, wie Holmes zu bedenken gibt. Steckt ein Zwist unter Logenbrüdern dahinter? Oder womöglich etwas ganz Anderes?

Holmes ist wieder einmal in chemische Studien vertieft - mit einer Einladung zum Pferderennen in Ascott möchte Watson ihn eigentlich ablenken. Als der Champion, Hengst Eclipse, jedoch kurz darauf tot aufgefunden wird, haben die beiden ihren nächsten Fall. Dessen Spuren führen zunächst in ein Londoner Elendsviertel und schließlich sogar bis an die Berliner Charité.

Ein altbekanntes Gesicht taucht in der Baker Street auf. Marcus Pompey war ein guter Freund von Mycroft Holmes. Er informiert Holmes und Watson darüber, dass ein Erpresserschreiben aufgetaucht ist, indem am Sonntag, den 25. Februar mit einer biblischen Katastrophe gedroht wird. Genau an diesem Tag findet in London ein Hungermarsch statt. Kaum auszudenken, welches Ausmaß ein Anschlag hier anrichten könnte. Leider gibt es keinerlei Hinweise auf den Erpresser selbst. Doch Holmes hat da schon eine Idee, um wem es sich dabei handeln könnte...

Als Holmes und Watson im Frühjahr 1889 die Indian and Colonial Exhibition in Süd-Kensington besuchen, werden sie zufällig Zeuge eines merkwürdigen Diebstahls: Auf das Abhandenkommen einer scheinbar wertlosen afrikanischen Holzstatue vermag sich niemand so recht einen Reim zu machen. Weitere Nachforschungen führen Holmes, Watson und dessen Frau Mary, die auch diesmal wieder einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Lösung des Falls leistet, in die jüngere europäische Kolonialgeschichte.
