"The Emperor’s Three Questions" is a parable of an emperor who seeks out a holy man for answers to questions he believes will help him to be a great ruler. Knowing that wisdom needs to be experienced, the holy man cannot just tell the emperor. The answers that unfold in the narrative will be better remembered.

This story, also translated as "The Imp and the Bread", concerns a peasant whose piece of bread was stolen by a little demon who hoped it would make the peasant curse. The opposite happened. The devil was displeased, and the imp set out on a successful three-year plan to make the peasant sin.

Tolstoy wrote this fascinating story in 1903. It is a parable about God ‘s creation of work, death, and sickness in order to make mankind happier. Finally, God saw that mankind did not really want to be happy, so he left them alone.

A short story by the Russian author and moral philosopher Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy, known as Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910). The story, first published in 1912 as "Notes of a Madman", is written from the perspective of an individual who seemed to not be quite sane, and who was examined by doctors. The opinions of the doctors were divided; they argued among themselves and came at last to the conclusion that he was not mad. But this was due to the fact that he tried hard during the examination not to be himself.

God Sees the Truth, but Waits (1872) is the story of a man falsely convicted and imprisoned in Siberia for a murder he did not commit. Tolstoy explores themes of forgiveness, faith, and guilt in this narrative, which inspired a novella by Stephen King and the film The Shawshank Redemption.

When a troubled schoolboy forges a cash coupon to pay off a debt, his deed starts off a chain reaction of tragedies that effects the lives of dozens, leading to thefts, imprisonments, murders, and in the end redemption. Originally published posthumously, this was one of the last works of Tolstoy, now excommunicated and raging against the hypocrisies of the Russian state and church.

"The Death of Ivan Ilyich", first published in 1886, is a novella by Leo Tolstoy, one of the masterpieces of his late fiction, written shortly after his religious conversion of the late 1870s.

The novel tells the story of the death, at age 45, of a high court judge in 19th century Russia.
