Jej misja może zagwarantować ludzkości szansę na zdobycie przewagi technologicznej w konflikcie z obcymi. Sojusz jednak nie czeka, aż wojna wymknie się mu spod kontroli, i w odpowiedzi podejmuje błyskawiczną kontrakcję. Czy obcych naprawdę interesują ludzie i ludzkie światy, czy może jednak gra toczy się o coś więcej?

Trwa wojna ludzi z Sojuszem obcych. Sorilla i jej zespół podejmują się niezwykle trudnej misji uwolnienia zakładników przetrzymywanych na jednej z wrogich planet. Pomimo że odbudowano orbitalne łącze na Świecie Haydena, w dżungli nadal grasują Strażnicy, prowadząc partyzancką walkę z oddziałami ludzi. Tymczasem w przestrzeni kosmicznej pojawia się nowy gracz, który zachwieje układem sił – ale Ziemianie też mają w zanadrzu niejedną niespodziankę. Jak zakończy się starcie w kosmosie? Czy Świat Haydena będzie znowu wolną planetą?

Dwa lata po inwazji na Świecie Haydena siły partyzantki i nieprzyjaciela znalazły się w impasie, ale żadna ze stron nie zamierza tak pozostawić stanu rzeczy. Sojusz obcych rzuca do walki kolejne siły, a Flota Solarna wprowadza do walki Task Force 5, grupę bojową składającą się z najnowocześniejszych okrętów skonstruowanych kiedykolwiek przez człowieka. Ostatecznie pewne rzeczy rozstrzygną się na niebie, ale o innych można zadecydować tylko na ziemi.

Koniec wojny nie oznacza końca walki. SOLCOM dowiaduje się, że Ross Ell podjęli ekspedycję przeciw niestowarzyszonemu gatunkowi, który zamieszkuje ziemię niczyją pomiędzy obszarami kontrolowanymi przez Ziemian a tymi, gdzie panuje Sojusz. W poszukiwaniu odpowiedzi i najlepszej metody działania SOLCOM wysyła okręt, który ma po cichu zbadać sytuację. Major Sorilla Aida i jej oddział zostają wyznaczeni do tego zadania. Ich wyprawa ma za wszelką cenę pozostać tajemnicą dla potężnych obcych. Jedna rzecz wydaje się pewna: wolność nigdy nie jest dana na zawsze, a opresja to uniwersalny sposób działania w kosmosie.

Wojna o Haydena się skończyła. SOLCOM i Sojusz rozpoczynają rozmowy pokojowe, ale żadna ze stron nie ma pojęcia, jak rozstrzygnęła się ostateczna bitwa w wojnie o Haydena. Dyplomatyczne niuanse nie są specjalnością major Sorilli Aidy, która dostaje zadanie: znaleźć jakąś słabość przeciwnika, dać ludziom czas, by dowiedzieli się, co się stało z Walkirią i jednocześnie mogli się upewnić, że Sojusz nie zaryzykuje kolejnego otwartego konfliktu.
