Story
Jackson doesn't admit he's from Detroit, much less that he used to run a bookie operation there. His bail-bond business in St. Paul is much safer, and if Charlie Victor wasn't his best client, he was at least a steady one, paying his bonding fee out of a secret stash he called his frag box. Then Charlie is beaten to death on a public street in broad daylight. His murder is bizarre and unexpected but no more so than the fact that he left a will naming Jackson as his sole heir.

Story
In 1936, escalating violence and unrest in Spain explodes into civil war. Sandro Risco Canovas, an apolitical but unlucky engineering student, is guilty by association and is named among the hundreds on Franco's blacklist. Hunted by the police, he seeks refuge with Jorge, a wounded zealot, and Teresa, a revolutionary spy. He is forced to flee the city alone, posing as a priest along the sacred pilgrimage route, the Saint James Way. On his trusty bicycle, Libertad (a la Don Quixote), Sandro makes his way toward his seaside village of Arcasella.

Story
The author of The Pilgrim's Progress, one of the most influential books in English literature, had little formal education. Born in 1628, the son of a tinker, John Bunyan was expected to follow in his father's footsteps. Bunyan experienced his first sorrow in adolescence, when both his mother and sister died. It wasn't his last. He was jailed twice for preaching the Gospel. Yet amidst repeated imprisonments, civil war, and violent persecution, Bunyan crafted The Pilgrim's Progress, a testament unlike any other to the triumph of the human spirit.

Story
During World War II many escape-line organizations contributed to the Allied cause by funneling hundreds of servicemen out of occupied Europe. As the Germans tightened their noose, the risk of discovery only grew for the servicemen who needed safe passage across the Pyrenees. In early 1944 two important escape-line organizations operated in southwestern France, handing over many fugitives to French passeur Jean-Louis Bazerque. Along with several of his successful missions, his only failure as a passeur is recounted in gripping detail in So Close to Freedom.
