Dans cette aventure, Lupin affronte avec humour et brio le brillant détective Herlock Sholmès, un double bien réel et tout aussi brillant du célèbre détective anglais Sherlock Holmes. Herlock Sholmes est une copie transparente du héros de Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes, qui en 1906 avait déjà connu un très grand succès en France.

À Paris, en 1907, un enlèvement est commis à l'Opéra durant un défilé de haute couture : la belle chanteuse Régine Aubry est conduite par deux individus dans une maison non-identifiée où on la dépouille de son corselet de diamants. Puis elle est relâchée, sans sa parure évidemment au grand dam du diamantaire véreux Van Houben qui avait conçu la robe.

Au cours d'un cambriolage chez le député Daubrecq, un crime est commis et deux complices d'Arsène Lupin sont arrêtés par la police. L'un est coupable du crime, l'autre innocent mais les deux seront condamnés à mort. Arsène Lupin va s'employer à délivrer la victime de l'erreur judiciaire, mais il devra lutter contre le député Daubrecq, maître-chanteur sans scrupule, qui détient un document compromettant, dissimulé dans un bouchon en cristal.

Arsène Lupin, jeune amant de Clarisse d'Étigues, sauve une certaine Joséphine Balsamo que le père et le cousin de Clarisse ont tenté de tuer sur ordre de leur maître chanteur, Beaumagnan. Beaumagnan et ses amis étaient des royalistes engagés. Joséphine Pellegrini-Balsamo était comtesse de Cagliostro, née à Palerme le 29 juillet 1788 d'une liaison de Joseph Balsamo et de Joséphine de la Pagerie.

Trente écueils menaçants cernent l'île de Sarek, au large de l'archipel des Glénans, en Bretagne. Les habitants superstitieux l'appellent l'île aux trente cercueils. Une légende les hante : trente victimes doivent mourir dont quatre femmes en croix.
