Un abogado que tiene su oficina en Wall Street narra la historia de Bartleby, un peculiar escribiente, quien un día, de repente, deja de escribir amparándose en su famosa fórmula: "Preferiría no hacerlo". Nadie sabe de dónde viene este escribiente, prefiere no decirlo, y su futuro es incierto pues prefiere no hacer nada que altere su situación. El abogado, desconcertado, no sabe cómo actuar ante esta rebeldía, pero al mismo tiempo se siente atraído por tal misteriosa actitud. Su compasión hacia el desobediente escribiente, hace de este personaje un ser tan extraño como el propio Bartleby.

Así comienza esta famosa obra que narra la travesía del barco ballenero Pequod, comandado por el capitán Ahab, junto a Ismael - quien narra la historia- y el arponero Quiqueg, en la mítica persecución de la gran ballena blanca. "Billy è l'ultimo. E Billy Budd è una parabola. In questo discorso in forma di racconto (che, come è noto, fu redatto tra il 1886-1888 e il 1891, anno della morte dell'autore, e uscì nella prima edizione soltanto nel 1924) infatti Billy dà vita alla figura angelicata di colui che sempre e comunque subisce e subirà il torto, l'ingiustizia, la prepotenza, l'illegalità (per dirla melvillianamente, le mire del maligno su questa terra).
