Tarzan's courtship of the female ape Teeka ends in failure when her preference turns to their mutual friend, the male ape Taug. Tarzan wrestles with his humanness versus his ape-ness. The allusion to Helen of Troy enriches the story, making Tarzan and Taug's fight over Teeka take on symbolic proportions. Stan Galloway writes: "when Burroughs chooses to name Helen as an objective correlative for Teeka, he expects both literal and emotional connections to occur." Tarzan's final claim of the story - "Tarzan is a man. He will go alone." - echoes the plight of Adam in the Garden of Eden.

Heroric, cheesy and imaginative, 'The Gods of Mars' is even more entertaining than 'A Princess of Mars'. When it comes to these Martian adventures, there is no such thing as a small taste.

When James gets murdered by Native Americans, John hides in a cave and is knocked out by a strange gas. When he wakes up, he is no longer on planet Earth.

Following the events of the first novel, Tarzan is grieving his beloved Jane, who is about to marry someone else. But he soon finds that there is more love to be had as he sets off to visit France, where he, besides causing some serious problems with Russian blackmailers, encounters several alluring women. But is Tarzan really done with Africa? And Jane? 'The Return of Tarzan' (1913) is the second in a series of twenty-four books about Tarzan, which author Edgar Rice Burroughs worked on until the 1940s.

At the conclusion of The Gods of Mars, John Carter's wife and two other women were locked in a slowly rotating prison attached to the Temple of the Sun, each of whose hundreds of cells are only open to the outside world once every year. John Carter must discover the secret of the Temple of the Sun to rescue the Holy Thern's daughter Phaidor, who has been imprisoned with Dejah Thoris and another Barsoomian princess, Thuvia of Ptarth.

While fleeing from a band of Apache warriors, Civil War veteran John Carter hides in a sacred cave, where he is mysteriously transported to Mars. Now endowed with superhuman abilities due to the low Martian gravity, he becomes embroiled in a conflict between the six-limbed Green Martians and humanoid Red Martians and meets the beautiful Dejah Thoris. This is book one of Edgar Rice Burroughs' Barsoom series.

After a 10-year absence, John Carter returns to Barsoom. He finds himself among the Therns, a white-skinned race of self-proclaimed gods, who have for eons deceived the Barsoomians elsewhere that the pilgrimage to the Valley Dor is a journey to paradise when it is in fact a valley of death.
