Sherlock Holmes und Dr. Watson werden beim Fund einer Wasserleiche beratend hinzugezogen. Rasch kann Holmes anhand der körperlichen Auffälligkeiten über die Lebensumstände der Frau schließen. Dem inzwischen im Ruhestand stehenden Sherlock Holmes werden von Dr. Watson höchst brisante Nachrichten heran getragen. In den Kinos liefe ein neuer Detektivfilm mit überaus anrüchigem Inhalt. Die Hauptfigur sollte niemand anderem als Sherlock Holmes selbst darstellen. Dr. Watson ist um den guten Ruf des Meisterdetektives in großer Sorge. Doch auch Dr. Watsons guter Ruf steht auf dem Spiel, wie auch die Ehe mit seiner geliebten Mary.

Hoher Besuch in der Baker Street. Der 8. Herzog von Marlborough, George Spencer-Churchill persönlich, suchte Sherlock Holmes und Dr. Watson auf. Sein überaus kostbares und seltenes Fabergé-Ei wurde ihm gestohlen. Doch der Herzog weiß sogar, wer es ihm entwendet hat. Nämlich seine getrennt lebende Frau, die besagtes Ei in dem Schloss des Herzogs gefinkelt versteckt hat. Nun ist es an Holmes das wertvolle Ei wieder in die Hände seines Besitzers zurück zu bringen.

Natürlich hätte Holmes eine automatische Datenverarbeitungsmaschine, wie sie heute in jedem Haushalt steht, gut gebrauchen können. Da sie aber zu seiner Zeit nur ein vager Traum sein konnte, musste er sich noch auf die eigene Intuition und die gelegentlichen Geistesblitze seines treuen Begleiters, Mitbewohners und Chronisten Dr. Watson verlassen. Einmal, bei einem Aufenthalt in Ägypten nach der Reichenbach-Affäre, wurde der gute Doktor durch Mister Tristram würdig vertreten.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle war ein Ausbund an Diskretion. Über prominente Zeitgenossen, die die Wege von Sherlock Holmes kreuzten, verlor er nie ein Wort. Nun konnte endlich wieder eine Handvoll lost cases aufgefunden und der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht werden.

Eines späten Abends stellt sich ein gewisser Jeremiah Baggins bei Sherlock Holmes und Dr. Watson vor. Der Mann arbeitet schon seit Jahrzehnten als Lockführer. Dabei hat er heute beobachtet, wie eine junge Frau, nur in einem Nachthemd bekleidet, mit drei Männern in einem offenen Automobil saß und dabei mit den Lippen die Worte: HILFE, HILFE formte. Einen der drei Männer kann Mr. Baggins genau beschreiben: Er hatte eine waagrechte Narbe im Gesicht, vom rechten bis zum linken Ohr.
