During a time of political and social unrest in Egypt, a god-like force, Nyarlathotep, emerges. He travels the land dazzling people with electricity and psychology. While witnesses of this god-like creature encourage others to see him, afterwards, people seem terrified. As the narrator recounts his experiences, he becomes disoriented. By the end of the story, the narrator and the other viewers of Nyarlathotep begin to lose touch with reality.

Solomon Kane was heading to Torkertown and had two routes to choose from a direct route across a moor, or a long tedious route through the swamps. Ignoring the warning of the villagers that he had just left behind, he decides that he will take the direct route across the moor. A young man of the village, seeing that Kane is heading towards the moor, rushes to beg him to please take the swamp route the next day instead of venturing through the moor at night.

A large part focuses on their belonging to a literary club and the other men who also participated in the club. It is a simple observance of social interactions, as put forth by a very old man and his dated voice.

When Kull visits the wizard, he learns that the wizard uses mirrors to allow Kull to look into the past and the future. But it is the mirror that shows only his own reflection that sends Kull into a distracting world of contemplation.

A young man who was exiled from his love for one year due to the wishes of her parents, finds himself in Paris. With not much else to do to pass his time, having seen most of the city and its suburbs, he begins exploring further away from Paris itself. His wanderings lead him to a strange, dusty village and into the dangerous house of an even stranger couple. At first he is thoroughly entertained by the conversation the odd old woman has to offer him, and even more engrossed once her strange husband joins the conversation as well.
