Originally, this talk was entitled "The United States in the Middle East: Confronting Syria." It was the second of three lectures sponsored by the Lebanese Club at MIT. Chomsky did not want to limit the talk to this one subject.

Noam Chomsky spoke to nearly 1,300 concerned citizens about the invasion and occupation of Iraq and the implications for U.S. foreign policy. Chomsky began with a review and analysis of the State of the Union Address and other necessary allusions. He wondered aloud when the U.S. will become a part of the world justice system instead of outside it. Chomsky pointed out how the U.S. government had opened a Pandora's Box with their loose interpretation of pre-emptive strike.

More than 200 peace and justice activists crowded into the Morrell Reading Room at Curtis Memorial Library in Brunswick, Maine, to hear veteran CIA analyst Ray McGovern address U.S. intelligence on Iraq and Iran.

On July 27, 2004, at the Paulist Center in Boston, a symposium was held at the Democratic National Convention. The symposium, entitled "Building the Peace Movement", was moderated by Mimi Kennedy. The discussion panel was composed of Dennis Kucinich, Phyllis Bennis, Tom Hayden, Medea Benjamin, and Steve Cobble.

During this event, Chomsky, along with Bernie Dwyer, a journalist and film maker, and Father Geoffrey Bottoms, a peace and justice activist from England, answers questions from the audience.

Father Michael Lapsley, an Anglican priest, went to South Africa in 1973 and immediately felt that he was caught in the duality of being either an "oppressor" or one of the "oppressed". He felt that he ceased being an individual, and became instead a "white man". He joined the African National Congress (ANC) in the struggle against apartheid because, he confesses, of his need to reclaim his humanity.

Noted academics and political commentators Howard Zinn and Noam Chomsky each spoke for about 20 minutes and answered questions for over an hour. At the beginning, Zinn jokingly said that he would speak about hope and let Chomsky deal with desperation. Both Zinn and Chomsky spoke about how political and social matters had improved for the better during the past century and that today's times were not as desperate as in the past.

Phyllis Bennis tracks the rise of U.S. unilateralism and the doctrine of preemptive war, looking particularly at Iraq and Israel/Palestine, and examines both the potential and the challenges ahead in reclaiming the U.N. as part of the global peace movement.

Accompanied by his daughter Morgan, and nursing a bandaged right hand, Utah Phillips accepted the "Joe Hill" Award and entertained labor musicians with a rare a capella performance for over an hour.

Water for People, Not for Profit was a Panel Discussion at the Boston Social Forum. The panel featured spirited presentations from Mary Evelyn Tucker of the Forum on Religion and Ecology; Maureen Taylor of the Michigan Welfare Rights Organization; and Barbara Garson, author of Money Makes the World Go Round: One Investor Tracks Her Cash Through the Global Economy, From Brooklyn to Bangkok and Back. Arnie Alpert of AFSC's New Hampshire Office chaired the panel.
