Marcus Tullius Cicéron : un des plus grands orateurs n'ayant jamais existé. Ses talents d'avocat lui permirent d'accéder à la magistrature suprême, fonction normalement réservée à la noblesse ; et la seule énergie de ses discours, les "Catilinaires", suffit à déjouer une terrible conjuration qui visait à l'élimination d'une partie de l'élite politique. Cicéron connut la gloire à la suite de cette affaire, avant que sa franche opposition au pouvoir d'Antoine lui coûte la vie en 43 av. J-C. L'œuvre de Cicéron est considérée comme un modèle d'expression latine, et on lui doit la transmission d'une part importante de la pensée grecque.

Marc Aurèle est le dernier des "Cinq bons empereurs" de Rome ; son règne marque l'apogée de l'empire romain, qui ne sera jamais plus riche et pacifié qu'alors. Il partage avec l'esclave Épictète une place majeure dans la philosophie stoïcienne, et ses enseignements n'ont rien perdu de leur utilité aujourd'hui. Ses Méditations sont une série de notes écrites pour son propre usage, pendant une campagne militaire, et témoignent de sa quête de sagesse et de perfectionnement.

Né esclave, Épictète devint l'un des plus grands philosophes stoïciens, et ses préceptes sont toujours appliqués aujourd'hui. Nous lui devons le stoïcisme, doctrine pensée pour éviter toutes les souffrances inutiles. Il n'y a que sur nos propres actions et attitudes que nous pouvons agir ; comme ce n'est pas parce que l'on s'inquiète beaucoup que les choses s'améliorent, il convient donc d'accueillir tout événement avec calme et sans passion.

Epictetus was born a slave, and became one of the most influent Stoic philosophers. Stoicism is the attitude allowing one to free oneself from the unnecessary suffering that arises from anxiety about events that are beyond our control; therefore, it can be of tremendous importance in one's life. According to Epictetus, our own actions and attitudes are the only thing in our control; whatever else happens, we should examine calmly and dispassionately, because no amount of suffering will change the impact of external events.

"De la vie heureuse" est un traité de sagesse, intemporel et universel. Il a été écrit par Sénèque comme un dialogue avec un interlocuteur imaginaire, vers 58 après Jésus Christ. L'œuvre est dédiée à Gallion, frère aîné de Sénèque. Son principal objet est de montrer que le bonheur n'est pas matériel, mais naît d'une vie en accord avec la vertu et la raison (selon les préceptes du stoïcisme).

I would like to show... that anyone who reads the dialogues of Plato without bias or an ax to grind will find a humorous, witty, pleasant friend; and not a desiccated scholarly mandarin. Plato was an open-minded, tolerant, reasonable individual, not a tight-lipped, pietistic, puritan. In a word, Plato was an Athenian, not a Spartan!". In the twenty-four centuries that have passed since the Athenians put Socrates to death, every generation has interpreted the meaning of Plato’s work differently.

Hippias of Elis travels throughout the Greek world practicing and teaching the art of making beautiful speeches. On a rare visit to Athens, he meets Socrates who questions him about the nature of his art. Socrates is especially curious about how Hippias would define beauty. They agree that "beauty makes all beautiful things beautiful," but when Socrates presses him to say precisely what he means, Hippias is unable to deliver such a definition. The more Socrates probes, the more absurd the responses from Hippias become.
