Kriminalkommissarie Arnold Nyman har motvilligt omplacerats till Göteborg. Han famlar sig fram i en för honom okänd stad, sökande efter en försvunnen kvinna som tros vara mördad. En kropp hittas, men förvirring uppstår när den visar sig tillhöra någon annan. Resten av roteln utreder ett sprängningsattentat och när spåren leder till en individ inom det politiska toppskiktet ter sig situationen allt mer invecklad.

Kvinnorna inom den Sicilianska maffian börjar ta för sig medan männen sitter i fängelse. En man flyr från staden Corleone och sin hustru till Sverige. Samtidigt hittas ett man med ett kulhål i höger tinning, på mannens privata strand i det förmögna Saltholmen i Göteborg. Det är bara ett av flera nyligen begångna mord som förbryllar polisen. Kriminalinspektör Elisabeth Andersson kopplas på fallet.

I matsalen på Vintersunds herrgård hålls en elegant middag. Vinet förtäljs ur slipade kristallglas och i silverljusstakarna brinner levande ljus. Men just som en skål ska utbringas stormar en grupp beväpnade män i rånarluvor in i matsalen. När de lämnar gården, med eldslågor som slickar fasaden, är gästerna brutalt våldtagna och mördade. Den nyligen befordrade kommissarie Nisse Bredberg tar sig an fallet och griper snart en man misstänkt för morden.

While doing his best to avoid talking to people, Ryabovitch enters a dark room, where he an unknown woman surprises him by kissing him, then running away. The unexpected kiss awakes Ryabovitch's curiosity and passion, and the man spends the rest of the evening searching for the mysterious woman.

Hilton Cubitt visits Sherlock Holmes to show him a sheet of paper with a weird sequence of drawn figures. When these odd messages began to arrive at Cubitt’s house, fear and panic overwhelmed his wife Elsie. She is afraid her past is catching up with her, but she refuses to reveal anything about it. Holmes is tasked with decipher the messages and find out who is sending them.
