Notes from Underground is an 1864 novella by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Notes is considered by many to be the first existentialist novel. It presents itself as an excerpt from the rambling memoirs of a bitter, isolated unnamed narrator (generally referred to by critics as the Underground Man), who is a retired civil servant living in St. Petersburg. The first part of the story is told in monologue form or the underground man's diary, and attacks emerging Western philosophy

This short story by Fyodor Dostoevsky was first published in 1848. A man walking past a wedding is reminded of a children’s New Year’s Eve party he attended 5 years previously – a party that was clearly an excuse for the parents to make advantageous connections in a casual setting. As an outsider at the party, he was able to observe the guests in greater detail than most, and took particular note of the children playing by the Christmas tree, and the social hierarchy they unwittingly participated in. This recording is based on the 1918 translation by Constance Garnett.

Denn mal ehrlich: Was ist das Großartige, das Weltverändernde an der russischen Literatur, der russischen Seele? Dass sie das von sich selber glaubt? Ist ihre Literatur unter all dem Größenwahn tatsächlich eine gute? Sir Galahad, die leuchtende Rittergestalt, ist dem Phänomen im Jahre 1925 auf der Spur.

Leo Tolstoi, Russlands großer Schriftsteller, schrieb nicht nur über "Krieg und Frieden" oder "Anna Karenina". Er schrieb auch über etwas so scheinbar Banales wie ein altes, krankes Pferd namens "Leinwandmesser". In fünf Nächten erzählt es den jüngeren Stallgenossen seine Lebensgeschichte von der einstigen Berühmtheit bis zu seinem späteren Verfall. Eindrucksvoll setzt Tolstoi dabei den menschlichen und den tierischen Niedergang in Beziehung zueinander.
