À la suite du traité de Tilsit, la paix semble à nouveau s'établir durablement en Europe. Et chacun de retourner à ses occupations d'avant-guerre. Les bals, les fêtes, l'insouciance des vies reprennent de plus belle, d'autant que beaucoup ont vu la mort de près et sont revenus auréolés de gloire. Les alliances entre les familles se nouent et se dénouent au gré des amours. Chacun pousse ses pions pour trouver le bon parti au mépris des autres même de ses anciens camarades de guerre.

Saint-Pétersbourg, un fonctionnaire devenu petit rentier, s'adonne à une introspection à l'adresse d'interlocuteurs muets. Bavard inoffensif ou pervers déroutant, il explore ses propres petitesses, se décrit tour à tour comme vil, malade et méchant puis se reprend, s'absout, visite son passé. The Lower Depths, also titled At the Bottom, is a 1902 play by the Russian author and playwright Maxim Gorky (1868-1936). This work portrays a group of wretched, impoverished outcasts living in a shelter near the Volga River. They play cards and tell stories, and are briefly uplifted by a new resident called Luca who gives them hope. When he goes off, the illusion of hope collapses, and the result is murder and suicide.

Uncle Vanya is a play by the Russian playwright Anton Chekhov. It was first published in 1897. The play portrays the visit of an elderly professor and his glamorous, much younger second wife, Yelena, to the rural estate that supports their urban lifestyle. Two friends—Vanya, brother of the professor's late first wife, who has long managed the estate, and Astrov, the local doctor—both fall under Yelena's spell while bemoaning the ennui of their provincial existence. Sonya, the professor's daughter by his first wife, who has worked with Vanya to keep the estate going, suffers from her unrequited feelings for Astrov.

Dostoevsky's life was marked by brilliance and brutality. Sentenced to death as a young revolutionary, he survived mock execution and Siberian exile to live through a time of seismic change in Russia, eventually being accepted into the Tsar's inner circle. He had three great love affairs, each overshadowed by debilitating epilepsy and addiction to gambling. Somehow, amidst all this, he found time to write short stories, journalism and novels such as Crime and Punishment, The Idiot and The Brothers Karamazov, works now recognised as among the finest ever written.

Notes from Underground, also translated as Notes from the Underground or Letters from the Underworld, is an 1864 novella by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Notes is considered by many to be one of the first existentialist novels. It presents itself as an excerpt from the rambling memoirs of a bitter, isolated, unnamed narrator (generally referred to by critics as the Underground Man), who is a retired civil servant living in St. Petersburg.
