Ein Wirtschaftsführer sitzt im Verhör seinem Untersuchungsrichter gegenüber. Zuvor hatten subalterne Polizeibeamte ihn mit ihren Fragen gequält und gepeinigt. Ein glatzköpfiger Kommissar hatte es sogar gewagt, ihn einen Mörder zu nennen. Dabei hatte er nur zufällig mit dem jungen Mann, der im Zug erschossen wurde, dasselbe Abteil geteilt. Zugegeben, der tödliche Schuss war aus seiner Pistole abgegeben worden, aber auch dafür gibt es eine Erklärung.

Fouqués reizendes Naturkind Undine, das erst durch die Liebe zu einem Menschen eine Seele erhalten kann, wurde sofort zu einer Figur der Weltliteratur, die in zahlreichen literarischen Variationen, in Ballett und Oper, vor allem aber durch Fouqués eigene märchenhafte Erzählung nach wie vor lebendig ist.

Die drei Nüsse ist eine Erzählung von Clemens Brentano, die vom 9. bis 15. August 1817 in der Zeitung "Der Gesellschafter oder Blätter für Geist und Herz" erschien. Angaben zur Entstehung des Textes und zu den Erscheinungsdaten finden sich im Band 19 der Frankfurter Brentano-Ausgabe.

Keller verlegt die tragische Geschichte des berühmtesten Liebespaares der Weltliteratur ins bäuerliche Milieu und ordnet sie damit einer anderen sozialen Thematik zu. Sali und Vrenchen, die Kinder zerstrittener Bauern, entdecken ihre Liebe zueinander und entfliehen der hoffnungslosen Situation für die Dauer eines Tages. Als der Morgen graut, wählen sie den gemeinsamen Freitod. Die tragische Geschichte um einen aussichtslosen Rechtsstreit, der die Eltern des Liebespaares ruiniert und ins Unglück stürzt, entscheidet so auch das Schicksal der nachfolgenden Generation.

Ein Mann und eine Frau, ein Widerstreit von Absichten und Leidenschaften, idealisiert gestaltet - und dank der formalen Meisterschaft Heyses auch eine Illustration der gattungserläuternden Falkentheorie.

Rainer Maria Rilke verfasste zwischen 1893 und 1906 zahlreiche Novellen und Erzählungen. "Der Totengräber" entstand zusammen mit anderen Erzählungen in mehreren Bearbeitungsschritten zwischen 1898 und 1903 und zeigen den Dichter auf dem Höhepunkt seiner Auseinandersetzung mit der Kurzform. Etwa 1906 gab Rilke das Schreiben von Erzählungen zugunsten der längeren Form auf, 1910 erschien sein einziger Roman, "Die Aufzeichnungen des Malte Laurids Brigge".

Die Reitergeschichte gilt als eine der rätselvollsten poetischen Prosaarbeiten des jungen Hofmannsthal: Aufgrund des Themas (Gewalt, Sexualität, Schein und Sein), des Erzählstils (Kleists Novellen und Anekdoten nachgeschrieben), der ästhetischen Inszenierung der Erzählräume (Mailand, das rätselhafte Dorf), nicht zuletzt aber aufgrund der "Plötzlichkeitsstruktur" des Endes.
