健三という知識人の主人公は夫婦関係や養父母との金銭のからんだ葛藤から神経衰弱になる。金銭問題が片付いたあとも「世の中に片付くなんてものは殆んどありゃしない」と苦々しく言う。イギリス留学から帰国して「吾輩は猫である」を書くころまでの漱石自身の身辺に起こった出来事を題材としていることから、もっとも自伝的要素の強い作品といわれる。

明治から昭和初期にかけて活躍した物理学者、随筆家、俳人である寺田寅彦の随筆作品。

初出は「経済往来」［1933（昭和8）年］。「寺田寅彦随筆集　第四巻」［小宮豊隆編、岩波書店、1948（昭和23）年］に収録。

幼い頃から体が弱かったので牛乳を飲まされていた。当時まだ飲みにくいものであった牛乳に少量のコーヒーを混ぜて飲んだ、という話から広がりを見せ、ついにはコーヒー哲学の序説なるものを綴った作品である。

大正・昭和時代の代表的哲学者。京都大学教授・名誉教授。西田哲学と呼称される京都学派の創始者。 日本初の本格的な哲学書となった、西田の代表作［弘道館、1911（明治44）年１月］。

東京での生活に傷ついた「私」が井伏氏の待つ富士山麓へと行くという物語。「私」はあまりにも俗な富士に辟易しながらも、そこでの人々との交流を通して少しづつ心を開いていく。井伏鱒二の勧めで御坂峠の天下茶屋に行ったことや石原美知子と見合いをしたことなど、太宰が1938年に実体験した出来事が素材となった作品。

「愛」と「現実」にゆれる女。 堀辰雄の唯一のロマン（本格的長編物語）で、堀文学の到達点といわれる晩年の代表作です。主人公の女性、菜穂子の母が娘にあてて綴った遺書がわりの手記である「楡の家」と、その後日談である「菜穂子」の二篇からなり、1934（昭和9）年に「楡の家　第一部」が「物語の女」の表題で、1941（昭和16）年に「楡の家　第二部」が「目覚め」の表題で「文學界」に、「菜穂子」が「中央公論」に掲載された。「菜穂子」では結婚後、高原のサナトリウムに入院している菜穂子が幼なじみの都築明と再会し、自分の人生を考え直す。

明治・大正期の文学者、森鴎外の代表的な短編小説作品。本作が森鴎外の処女小説である。初出は「国民之友」［1890年（明治23年）］。初期の代表作であり、1884年から5年間のドイツ留学時の体験を下敷きにして書かれた。主人公、太田豊太郎はエリート官吏である。彼はドイツ留学中に舞姫エリスと出会い、二人で暮らし始める。しかし、そのことによって周囲から中傷され官職を辞することになる。やがて、豊太郎は、前途を案じる友人からの勧めに応じて、エリスとの別れを決意。事情を知り発狂した身重のエリスを残し、豊太郎は日本へと帰国する。近代文学の代表的なロマンチシズム溢れる作品である。

This book, written by Prakash Pandit, describes the events in the life of Firaq Gorakhpuri, who was an Urdu poet, writer and critic. He was one of the most noted contemporary Urdu poets from India, and he has written a number of ghazals, nazmas, rubais and stories. Many of his works are still revered for their contemporary relevance, and he was awarded Padma Bhushan in the later part of his life. The number of ghazals written by him is said to be in the hundreds, and a few selected ones are given in a separate section of the book.

This Hindi play by Mohan Rakesh debuted in 1958 and is considered the first modern Hindi play. The play received a Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for best play in 1959. Before this play was written, Hindi plays were either idealistic or didactic, devoid of any connection with contemporary reality; above all their language remained the language of literature, which wasn't suitable for the stage. This play changed it all. Mohan Rakesh went on to write two more plays and left one unfinished at the time of his death in 1972.

This book by Prakash Pandit reflects upon the life of an 18th-century Urdu poet named Meer Taqi Meer who lived in Mughal, India. Meer Taqi was one of the pioneers who gave shape to the Urdu language. He was one of the principal poets of the Delhi school of Urdu ghazal, and most of his literature has been written under his nom de plume, Mir.
