Gleichzeitig ist ein ironisch-distanzierter Umgang mit den verbrauchten Bildern und Gefühlen der romantischen Liebesweh-Poesie erkennbar.

Sein geistvoller und plaudernder Prosastil („Reisebilder“ 1826 bis 1831) machte ihn zum Begründer des modernen Feuilletonismus.

Seit einiger Zeit sträubt sich etwas in mir gegen alle gebundene Rede, und wie ich höre, regt sich bei manchen Zeitgenossen eine ähnliche Abneigung.
