Novela histórica que relata los hechos acaecidos entre 26 de julio y 2 de agosto de 1909 en Barcelona. Todo empezó cuando iban a embarcar tropas con destino a África, donde se llevaba a cabo una guerra demencial que significaba la muerte cierta para los reclutas. Las esposas y madres de los soldados se rebelaron, los incitaron a la deserción y así se inició una rebelión que llenó las calles de la ciudad de sangre y fuego, con iglesias quemadas y violadas, y barricadas donde los obreros liberaron su rabia por unas condiciones laborales inhumanas.

Es ist sein Abschiedsgeschenk, denn Johann meldet sich freiwillig in den Kriegsdienst, um für seine geliebte Heimat zu kämpfen. Das kostbare Andenken seines Vaters wird für Paul und seine Kinder zu einem Symbol für Hoffnung und Zusammenhalt, während der Hass auf sein Volk wächst und sich die Schlinge um die renommierte Juwelierfamilie enger zieht. Das Erbstück wird den Blumenthals Trost schenken, sie in Gefahr bringen und eines Tages trennen.

Pubblicata per la prima volta nell'agosto del 1915 sul Giornale di Sicilia, "Colloquii coi personaggi" è una novella in cui possiamo ascoltare lo stesso Pirandello mentre dialoga con un personaggio e con il ricordo della madre defunta. Ambientata allo scoppio della Prima Guerra Mondiale, la novella presenta un'interessante riflessione sui doveri dell'intellettuale e su quelli dell'autore.

Pirandello ci accompagna all'interno dello scompartimento di un vagone ferroviario in cui ritroviamo il timore e le angosce di un intero paese allo scoppio della Grande Guerra. Uno spaccato umano eccezionale con cui Pirandello riesce a raccontarci un mondo intero.

Allo scoppio della Grande Guerra Marco Leccio decide di arruolarsi. Si presenta così alla leva con tanto di divisa da garibaldino. Le motivazioni alla base del suo gesto sono politiche e sentimentali: vuole partecipare alla liberazione delle terre irredente interrotta a Bezzecca, ma vuole anche andare al fronte insieme a suo figlio.

Pubblicata per la prima volta nel 1919, "Berecche e la guerra" verrà poi inserita da Pirandello in "Novelle per un anno". Pirandello ci presenta la storia del Prof. Berecche, studioso e cultore della Germania, che dovrà confrontarsi con il dramma e l'insensatezza della Prima Guerra Mondiale.

Gaetano Marino interpreta "La camera in attesa", classica novella di Pirandello incentrata sul patetismo degli affetti familiari sullo sfondo della Grande Guerra.
