Marx's complex theories about society, economics, and politics - collectively understood as Marxism - hold that human societies develop through class struggle. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is a 1865 novel written by English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson penned under the pseudonym of Lewis Carroll. It tells the story of a little girl named Alice falling through a rabbit hole into a fantasy world populated by peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures. Many feel it is perhaps the very first psychedelic novel. One can certainly draw parallels with the eating of magic mushrooms and apparently hallucinating, yet still it is chiefly a beloved children’s story.

This gothic story by Washington Irving appeared in his collection of essays and short stories titled The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. Along with its companion piece "Rip Van Winkle", "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" is among the earliest examples of American fiction with enduring popularity. "The Raven" is a narrative poem by writer Edgar Allan Poe which is noted for its musical rhythm and supernatural ambiance. It deals with a raven's mysterious visit to a distraught lover, chronicling the poet's descent into madness. The poem makes use of classical, folk, mythological, and religious references.

Cradock Nowell: A Tale of the New Forest is a three-volume novel by R. D. Blackmore published in 1866. Set in the New Forest and in London, it follows the fortunes of Cradock Nowell who, at the end of the first volume, is thrown out of his family home and disowned by his father following the suspicious death of Cradock's twin brother Clayton, their father's favorite.
