Operation Protective Edge, launched in early July 2014, was the third major Israeli assault on the Gaza Strip in six years. It was also the most deadly. By the conclusion of hostilities some seven weeks later, 2,200 of Gaza's population had been killed, and more than 10,000 injured. In this book, journalist Mohammed Omer, a resident of Gaza who lived through the terror of those days with his wife and then three-month-old son, provides a first-hand account of life on-the-ground during Israel's assault.

As a teenager in Palestine, Sami al Jundi had one ambition: overthrowing Israeli occupation. With two friends, he began to build a bomb to use against the police. But when it exploded prematurely, killing one of his friends, al Jundi was caught and sentenced to 10 years in prison. It was in an Israeli jail that his unlikely transformation began. Al Jundi was welcomed into a highly organized, democratic community of political prisoners who required that members of their cell read, engage in political discourse on topics ranging from global revolutions to the precepts of nonviolent protest and revolution.

On November 10, 1975, the General Assembly of United Nations passed Resolution 3379, which declared Zionism a form of racism. Afterward, a tall man with long, graying hair, horned-rim glasses, and a bowtie stood to speak. He pronounced his words with the rounded tones of a Harvard academic, but his voice shook with outrage: "The United States rises to declare, before the General Assembly of the United Nations, and before the world, that it does not acknowledge, it will not abide by, it will never acquiesce in this infamous act."

All’origine di questo libro c’è un viaggio che comincia in Israele e nei territori occupati della Palestina al principio del 2023 e prosegue – nella riflessione – nei mesi seguenti l’eccidio del 7 ottobre. Roberta De Monticelli vede rappresentato nella Palestina il luogo in cui prende forma esemplare e tragica uno dei paradossi su cui si regge la civiltà. Da quando esiste, il diritto è in tensione costante con la giustizia e con la forza e vige in virtù della politica che pure ne è vincolata e regolata – salvo farsi non solo cieca ma criminale.

Tra israeliani e palestinesi chi ha torto e chi ha ragione? Chi sono i "buoni" e chi i "cattivi"? Gli israeliani, che "da vittime si sono trasformati in carnefici"? O i palestinesi, che "non vogliono altro che distruggere Israele"? E quando comincia il conflitto? A fine Ottocento, con la nascita del sionismo, negli anni Venti del Novecento o nel 1948, quando Israele viene attaccato dai paesi arabi "con l’obiettivo di annientarlo", o quando si verifica la "pulizia etnica dei palestinesi"? E perché la pace non è mai stata raggiunta?
