1530’erne var turbulente og skelsættende for Danmark. I 1534 var den danske trone ubesat, og det medførte en lang række stridigheder mellem dem, der kappedes om tronen. Samtidig forøgedes spændingen mellem den herskende katolske kirke og lutheranerne, der ville reformere kirken. Anført af Skipper Clement gjorde bønderne oprør mod den grove undertrykkelse og urimelige ulighed. Der blev slået hårdt ned på oprøret, og de efterfølgende år blev kun værre for bønderne.
