En lille kreds af socialdemokrater dyrkede under Anden Verdenskrig en fascination af det tyske. Nogle tog springet og blev decideret nazister. Stauning, som var statsminister frem til sin død i 1942, før krigslykken vendte, talte selv for samarbejdspolitikken, var fascineret af den økonomiske politik (planøkonomi), som førtes i Tyskland, og så formentlig ingen anden udvej på krigen, end at Danmark på en eller anden måde ville blive indlemmet i et stortysk rige.

Det sattes upp en svensk frivilligkår för Norge i början av 1945 när man befarade skoningslösa slutstrider i det tyskockuperade grannlandet. Den svenska regeringens beslut om frivilligkåren var ett av många långtgående neutralitetsbrott till förmån för den allierade sidan i kriget. I Norge opererade också en svensk gerillagrupp med namnet Fritjof. Da Peter Øvig gravede sig ned i en research om seksuelle overgreb mod børn på danske børnehjem, viste der sig et uhyggeligt billede: Overgrebene var omfattende, velorganiserede og stod ofte på over flere årtier. Gennem otte års arbejde mødte Peter Øvig en række tidligere børnehjemsbørn, som fortalte om organiserede seksuelle overgreb, de havde oplevet på børnehjem rundt i landet, især i 1960’erne og -70’erne.
