"Età oscura" e "millennio della superstizione" sono solo due delle tante definizioni date, nel tempo, al Medioevo. Ma questo periodo storico fu davvero "buio" come si è ormai cristallizzato nell'immaginario collettivo? In realtà, la maggior parte degli studiosi del Nuovo Millennio afferma che quel periodo della storia dell'umanità contenga già, in embrione, molti degli aspetti determinanti dell'Europa moderna.

Il Medioevo, quello tradizionalmente compreso tra la fine del V e la fine del XV secolo, deve essere visto come un periodo molto più positivo di quel che si è creduto per tanto tempo. Ne sono stati protagonisti sovrani, principi, condottieri, filosofi, letterati, santi e pontefici, le cui vite e gesta questo saggio si propone di far rivivere. Una delle caratteristiche più significative e affascinanti del Medioevo visto attraverso i suoi uomini e le sue donne più celebri, è l'apparizione di nuove figure di eroi, anche femminili.

A torto ritenuto un'epoca immobile, il Medioevo è fatto anche di viaggi. Per ragioni politiche e per lavoro, per pregare o per studiare: viaggiano re e mercanti, pellegrini e fuorilegge, chierici e giullari, emarginati e cavalieri erranti. E si naviga nei fiumi, nei laghi, nei canali, nei mari e nell'oceano. Ma che cosa significava mettersi per strada lasciando la propria casa alle spalle, come si viaggiava in concreto, quali erano le conoscenze e le fantasie geografiche, quali i paesi conosciuti, quale il rapporto con le genti straniere?

Anche nel Medioevo troviamo donne disposte a vendere il proprio corpo "pro pretio, lucro et questu": condannata e ritenuta una vergogna, la prostituzione era però considerata ineliminabile e persino necessaria. Giustificabile, perché salvava da mali peggiori come la corruzione delle vergini e delle spose e "l'abominevole vizio della sodomia". Ma qual era la posizione della Chiesa e dei pubblici poteri nel regolare questo fenomeno divenuto assai rilevante? Nel Trecento, infatti, si assiste ovunque in Europa al proliferare dei postriboli, a volte quasi piccole fortezze del piacere.
