This collection of articles on constitutional government was written by three of the most significant figures in the establishment of the United States as sovereign nation. Alexander Hamilton, one of the most influential of the Founding Fathers, was the author of 51 of the 85 articles. James Madison, who later served as the fourth president, contributed 29 articles. The remaining five articles were written by John Jay, who was active in a number of public positions, including chief justice, various cabinet posts under Washington and governor of New York.

In the novel Little Women, Mr. March goes off to war. But in real life, it was Jo March (Louisa May Alcott herself, an avowed abolitionist) who traveled to Washington to nurse Northern soldiers. This is Alcott’s memoir but she chose to use the pseudonym “Tribulation Periwinkle” to tell her story. Despite the subject matter, her account is full of amusing anecdotes as she makes her way alone from Concord, Massachusetts to DC, trying to finagle a free ticket and convinced she will drown during the journey.

The “Law West of the Pecos", with a great appetite for publicity and a knack for achieving it, was something more than an amusing old scoundrel—for Roy Bean had in him the stuff of a folk hero of the sort which the Old West could hardly again produce.

Lincoln's carefully crafted address came to be seen as one of the greatest and most influential statements of American national purpose. Unlike many slaves who escaped in the dead of night chased by slave hunters and bloodhounds, the Crafts traveled in first-class trains, dined with a steamboat captain, and stayed in the best hotels during their escape to Philadelphia and freedom. Ellen, who was nearly white, disguised herself as a young male cotton planter traveling with his slave, William.

The prize-winning History of the American Frontier, 1763-1893 covers a very wide sweep of topics, with unusual strength in handling violent relations between the frontiersman and the Indians. Paxson emphasized the impact on people of the process of moving to the west, downplaying the static aspects of specific localities.

Charles A. Beard, a proponent of the “New History", emphasized the importance of cultural economic developments as opposed to just warfare and diplomacy.

Carter Godwin Woodson (December 19, 1875-April 3, 1950) was an American historian, author, journalist, and the founder of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). He was one of the first scholars to study the history of the African diaspora, including African American history. A founder of The Journal of Negro History in 1916, Woodson has been called the “father of black history."

J. Franklin Jameson helped found the American Historical Association (1884), and was the first managing editor of the American Historical Review. He also wrote The American Revolution Considered as a Social Movement (1926) and invited W. E. B. Du Bois to present a paper concerning Reconstruction at the 1909 AHA meeting. With Waldo Leland, he started lobbying Congress to create the National Archives, the building for which was first funded in 1926.

A Generation of American Historiography by William A. Dunning is a nice overview of book trends and the histories and historians in the decades (a generation) prior to 1900, when most historians were male and white, of course … but not all.
