Like før hadde fly fra den japanske marinen angrepet den amerikanske basen på Midway, en øy midt i Stillehavet. Japanernes mål var å ødelegge basen og ta full kontroll over Stillehavet. Men angrepet var avslørt på forhånd av amerikanske kodebrytere, og U.S. Navy var klar til å slå hardt tilbake mot fiendens hangarskip. De to flåtene kunne ikke på noe tidspunkt se hverandre, men sendte derimot angrepsbølger av fly flere hundre nautiske mil over havet på jakt etter fienden.
