James Baldwin (1841-1925) was a textbook editor and children's author on the subject of legends, mythology, and biography, among others. Thirty More Famous Stories Retold (1905) was written by the author in response to requests for more stories like the ones in his popular book of 1896, Fifty Famous Stories Retold.

Peter befriends Wendy, John and Michael Darling and teaches them to fly, with a little help from fairy dust. Other characters in Peter’s world are the fairy Tinker Bell, the Lost Boys, and the "dastardly" pirate Captain Hook. Peter has a series of adventures on the island Neverland where fairies, mermaids, Native Americans and pirates live. Peter and Wendy remains a perennial children’s favorite, and adults also love the book.

Frank Richard Stockton (1834-1902) was an author and humorist, best known for a series of fairy tales that were hugely popular during the latter part of the 19th century. Stockton avoided the moralizing common to children's stories of the time, and instead humorously poked fun at the abuse of power, greed, violence, and a host of other human flaws. A griffin (a beast that is a combination of eagle and lion) comes to a town that has his likeness above the church door. Having never seen himself, the griffin becomes entranced with the statue, but his presence frightens the villagers....
