Generations ago, humanity was devastated by a virus that wiped billions from the planet. If not for AmeriGlobe's Pairing program to match immune survivors, and VaxWell's immunity-boosting biomods, humans would've died out. Lora Flannigan has sought to conform to the strict laws throughout her 18 years, and after the Testing she now stands on the brink of a prestigious pairing with high caste Jarid. Accepting the match will pull her and her family up from their low-caste existence.

The story centers on Frank Aguilar, whose troubled 19-year-old son Alan — struggling with depression and his hidden sexuality — impulsively signs up for the service after a romantic betrayal. Despite Alan's desperate last-minute pleas for help (captured in a voicemail to his father), he's brutally killed by one of the company's "employees." When Frank's legal battle against Suicide Inc. fails in court, he teams up with his friend Danny, an Iraq War veteran who discovers his own uncle was also a victim of the service.
