Twenty years ago the next global pandemic struck and the world wasn't at all prepared to deal with it. The virus overtook mankind, leaving in its wake a higher population of the infected rather than the healthy. Governments and economies collapsed and borders were closed. Every country around the world decided independently on just how they were going to attempt to deal with the virus, and the infected. Some smaller countries fell victim entirely while others experimented in their labs to try and find a cure.

As the owner of the motel, I'm pleased with how things have turned out lately. The young guests have that moved in are quite resourceful, creating a garden that not only provides fresh vegetables but also brings in some extra cash. And with the addition of coffee from the Red Rooster Roasters, business is booming.

In this tale of post-apocalyptic survival, Leonard Ackerman works at a remote army base trying to solve the greatest threat facing mankind—an alien invasion has eroded our species down to very few numbers. His base is compromised, and Ackerman retreats to a laboratory he has never been seen, locking himself there with the enemy right outside his door. Inside the lab are 13 telephones—from the American Civil War through to Ackerman's present day. This lab seems to be some sort of closed experiment, and Ackerman discovers that he cannot exit until the experiment has run its course.
