On the fifth day at sea, everyone starts to relax, but trouble is right behind them. That night, a Nazi U-boat torpedoes the Benares.

Twelve-year-old Isabel is the new kid in her San Francisco middle school. It’s the first time in many years that she’ll be living with her mother again. Mama's job in the US allowed Isabel and her grandparents to live more comfortably in the Philippines, but now Isabel doesn't really know her own mother anymore. In this story the child is invited on a healing journey where their loss is personified as a fictional visitor known as the Loss Total. The narrator models a coping technique as an example for the child dealing with grief of any sort. “The Loss Total” offers a standing invitation to the child. The child will learn that others also experience loss and they can utilize Nature to assist with healing. It allows them to explore their emotions, such as confusion and distress, that grief ushers into to their young worlds.
