The book of Lamentations is book of sorrowful songs or poems. The name implies that the topic is expressing grief over something (to lament). Jeremiah, also known as the "weeping prophet" writes this after the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians. It was written soon after the fall of Jerusalem in 586 B.C.; he was an eyewitness. He predicted this destruction (as did others), watched it take place, and now in this book he is sadly reflecting on it.

The books of Jeremiah and Lamentations provide a powerful account of God's justice, judgment, and faithfulness in the face of persistent rebellion. Jeremiah delivers a sobering message of impending destruction due to Judah's sin while also offering hope through a promise of a New Covenant. Lamentations, written after the fall of Jerusalem in 586 BC, is a poetic expression of grief over the city's destruction while affirming God's enduring mercy and hope of restoration.

The tone of the book is set by a man deeply troubled about the state of his fellow Jews and the world in general. He is reaching out to the Jews in exile in Babylon attempting to explain to them that their captivity and exile is God's response to Israel's pagan worship. Jeremiah frames his metaphors in several ways, hoping the Jews will understand the weight of their sins. He tells them they are like an unfaithful wife, rebellious children, and their infidelity and rebelliousness made God’s judgment inevitable.
