A quasi trent'anni da quell'evento, la mattina del 12 agosto 2022, mentre si trovava sul palco del Chautauqua Institution - nello stato di New York - per tenere una conferenza, un uomo in abiti e maschera neri si precipitò lungo il corridoio verso di lui brandendo un coltello. Il primo pensiero di Rushdie fu: "Sei tu, dunque. Eccoti qui".

Il 14 febbraio del 1989 Salman Rushdie riceve la telefonata di una giornalista della BBC che lo informa di essere appena stato "condannato a morte" dall'ayatollah Khomeini. E per la prima volta sente pronunciare la parola "fatwa". La sua colpa? Aver scritto un romanzo intitolato "I versi satanici", un libro accusato di blasfemia, una bestemmia "contro l'islam, il Profeta e il Corano".
